The quality of Herefordshire’s soils is an important contribution to agricultural productivity. There is world-wide concern that soil degradation is leading to reduced levels of fertility. Measuring “soil health” is not straightforward and at the moment it is impossible to obtain data specific to Herefordshire.

However, this is an important subject and there are a number of initiatives, such as Farm Herefordshire, designed to improve soil and water management.
